UDPDATED DEC 2024
If you’re heading to the Riviera Maya, an ultimate day trip to Tulum is an absolute must. This charming beach town should be at the top of your bucket list! Tulum has quickly become the go-to spot for travelers looking for turquoise waters, incredible food, and the chance to explore ancient Mayan ruins.
My boyfriend and I were staying in Playa del Carmen at the beginning of January, and we decided to take a day off from the resort and head over to Tulum. Let me tell you, it was everything I imagined and more! The laid-back vibe, the stunning beaches, and the delicious food made it the perfect escape.
Next time we’re in Mexico, I’m definitely planning to stay in Tulum to truly soak in the beauty of the town and its surroundings. It’s one of those places that you just can’t help but fall in love with!
HOW TO GET TO TULUM?
There are several options for getting to Tulum, each with its own pros and cons depending on your budget and preferences.
1. Private Full-Day Cab — You can arrange a private cab through your resort or hotel’s front desk. The driver will stay with you for the day, making it convenient for multiple stops. Expect to pay around $200 USD for a 6-7 hour trip.
2. Taxi — Taxis are another option, and you can easily arrange one through your hotel. From our resort, Grand Sunset, the cost for a one-way trip to Tulum was about $80 USD.
3. Colectivo — This is the option we chose and it was affordable and convenient. A colectivo is a shared minibus or van, which is the primary mode of transportation for locals. It’s much cheaper than a private taxi or cab.
> Cancún to Playa del Carmen: 20-40 pesos
> Playa del Carmen to Tulum: 20-40 pesos
Colectivos run 24/7 and depart every 15 minutes, making them easy to catch and an excellent budget-friendly choice. I felt safe the entire time and would highly recommend this option for those looking to save money.
It all depends on your preference—whether you want the convenience and privacy of a cab or the affordability of a colectivo!
How to catch a Colectivo
If you are staying directly in Playa Del Carmen all you need to do is walk up to Calle 2 between Ave 5 and 10 where you will find all of the colectivos parked up. Just look out for the minivans that say Playa Del Carmen to Tulum or listen for someone shouting Tulum.
If you are staying along highway 307 between Cancun – Playa Del Carmen. You walk out to the highway on the south direction side. Vans will flicker their high beams at you and If you want to be picked up, waive your hands at them. When they pull over say what direction you are going to or the location you are wanting to be dropped off at.
Please note if you are staying at a resort before Playa Del Carmen. Your colectivo will stop in Playa Del Carmen at the main terminal and you will require to pay, get out and transfer to a van that says Tulum.
TIP
Renting a bike as soon as you get to Tulum Town is the easiest way to get to the beach and back. We learned the hard way by walking—it’s much quicker and more convenient to bike! You can also take a cab (be prepared to pay a lot), but biking gives you more freedom to explore. Highly recommended!
THINGS TO DO/SEE IN TULUM
It is important to know that Tulum is broken up into two sections; Tulum Town and Tulum Beach.
**Please keep in mind most places along Tulum Beach only accept cash. I would recommend when you start your day in Tulum town to go to a bank to take out cash as a lot of the ATM’s along the beach are not the safest and a lot of cards have been compromised.
