What to pack for an All Inclusive Trip

I want to start this post by saying I hope you’re all staying safe and well during this challenging time. While many of us may not be traveling internationally for a while, I wanted to have this post ready for when travel resumes!

When it comes to preparing for a vacation, I get so excited about packing (though unpacking… not so much, haha). I love planning out my outfits and swimsuits for each day, and I especially enjoy checking off items on my packing list—it really builds the excitement for the trip! In this post, I’m sharing all my tips on what to pack for an all-inclusive vacation.

When we went to Mexico back in January, it was my first all-inclusive vacation, and I learned a lot. I realized I had overpacked on things I didn’t need, and there were a few things I wish I had packed. So, after returning home, I knew I had to write a post about what to pack for an all-inclusive getaway. If you’d like to read more about our Mexico trip, click [here].

And at the end of the post, I’ve included a printable checklist to make packing easier for you!

*Please know this is just my advise, and what I like to pack,  each person likes to travel differently and that’s okay! If you see something in my list that is a travel must for you, please let me know! I always like to hear new items that people find handy on vacation.

CARRY ON / PERSONAL BAG

Passport // This is the number one item I always make sure is packed. Without a passport, you won’t be flying anywhere! I also recommend taking a photo of your passport and IDs, just in case they get lost or stolen while you’re traveling.

Book/Kindle // I always like to bring a book with me for those moments when I’m sitting at the airport, on the plane, or relaxing poolside or oceanside. It’s a great way to pass the time!

Headphones // Headphones are a must-have for the plane! They help block out noise so you can relax, listen to music, podcasts, or even an audiobook.

Charger // Don’t forget your charger! Bring both a portable charger and a regular plug-in charger. While the portable charger isn’t strictly necessary, I highly recommend it—especially in case of emergencies, you don’t want to be without a phone.

Swimsuit // Yes, a swimsuit! Always pack one in your carry-on, just in case your luggage gets lost. It’s also handy if you arrive at your resort and your room isn’t ready right away—you can hit the pool or beach without delay!

Extra Outfit // This is especially important if you have a layover. If your luggage gets delayed or lost during your transfer, an extra outfit in your carry-on will help you stay comfortable until they can deliver your luggage.

Sunhat // I prefer to carry my sunhat with me on the plane, rather than packing it in my suitcase. If you pack it away, it can get squashed and flattened. Keeping it with you ensures it stays in shape!

Sunglasses // Obvious, but essential! Make sure you bring a pair in your carry-on, and pack a couple of backups in your suitcase.

Cash/Credit Card // Never store your credit card or cash in your checked luggage. Always keep them on hand in your carry-on or purse. Also, remember to bring some small bills for tips. Even though it’s an all-inclusive resort, tipping the staff for their hard work is always appreciated.

Travel Wallet // I just bought this super cute travel wallet from Amazon for $20, and it’s now a staple for all my trips. It keeps everything organized in one place—my passport, plane tickets, cash, and credit cards—so I don’t have to rummage through my bag when I need something.

Checked Luggage

Clothing

Swimsuits // I recommend packing 2-4 swimsuits for a weeklong trip. It’s always nice to have a dry swimsuit ready to go, especially after a swim. Or, like me, you can pack a different swimsuit for each day you’re there! 😉

Cover-up // Cover-ups are a must! They’re perfect for throwing on over your swimsuit when you’re heading to the pool or beach. So easy and stylish!

Shorts // Pack a couple of pairs of shorts. However, keep in mind that you’ll likely be spending most of your time in your swimsuit, so you won’t need too many options.

Casual Tops // Casual tops are great for throwing on over your swimsuit. Lightweight, breathable fabrics will keep you cool during the day.

Dressy Tops // For nice dinners, dressy tops are a great choice. These can easily be paired with shorts or a skirt for a more polished look.

Dresses/Rompers // I’m a romper girl myself, but both dresses and rompers are perfect for dinners or for when you want something easy to throw on. Two-piece sets are also cute and very trendy right now!

Sweaters // I always wear my sweater on the plane to save space in my suitcase, but it’s nice to have one on hand in case it gets chilly during the evenings. A lightweight sweater is ideal.

Pyjamas // Lightweight, thin PJs are best for tropical destinations—you don’t want to overheat while trying to sleep in hot weather.

Underwear // Even though you’ll likely spend 90% of your time in a swimsuit, don’t forget to pack a pair of underwear for each day, just in case.

Shoes
Here’s my go-to shoe packing strategy:

  • Flip Flops for the pool and beach
  • Dressier Sandals for dinners or nights out
  • Heels for any dressier events or dinners
  • Running Shoes (which I usually wear during travel) in case you plan on doing any off-resort excursions or a lot of walking. Comfortable shoes are key!
Toiletries

Sunscreen / Tanning Lotion // Sunscreen at resorts is notoriously expensive, so if you have the room, it’s definitely worth bringing your own. It can save you a lot of money! Plus, it’s always nice to have a brand you’re familiar with.

Shampoo / Conditioner // I prefer to travel with my own shampoo and conditioner because I know what works for my hair. Plus, hotel/resort products can be hit or miss, so it’s just easier to bring what you’re used to.

Razor // If you plan on shaving, don’t forget a razor! (You’d be surprised how many people forget this one.)

Toothbrush / Toothpaste // No one wants stinky breath, especially on vacation, so be sure to pack your toothbrush and toothpaste. You’ll feel so much better!

Body Lotion // With all the sun and pool time, your skin will appreciate some hydration. A good body lotion will help keep your skin feeling soft and moisturized.

Hairbrush // Unless you’re one of those rare people who doesn’t brush their hair, make sure to pack a hairbrush or comb to keep your locks tangle-free!

Makeup // I usually skip the makeup on vacation, but I bring the essentials in case I want to freshen up for a nicer dinner or a night out. Keep it light and simple!

Deodorant & Perfume // This is a must—nobody wants to be stinky, especially in the heat. Make sure to pack both deodorant and perfume to stay fresh!

Medication // I always travel with a small kit of over-the-counter meds: Advil for headaches, Pepto for stomach issues, and Gravol (an all-natural anti-nausea remedy) just in case. It’s better to have it and not need it!

Extras

Small Backpack / Purse // I always travel with a small backpack that fits just the essentials. It’s perfect for days when you’ll be walking around the resort or exploring nearby areas—easy to carry, but big enough to hold everything you need.

Your Own Cup (YETI) // If you love your never-ending Pina Coladas (or any drink, really!), bringing your own insulated cup can be a game changer. A YETI or similar tumbler will keep your drinks cold much longer, so you can enjoy that refreshing sip even in the heat.

Neck Pillow // If you’re someone who likes to nap on the plane, a neck pillow is a must. It’ll make those long flights much more comfortable and help you arrive rested and ready for your vacation.

Small Pool Floatie // If you’re heading to a resort with a pool (or just want a fun addition to your beach day), a small pool floatie is a great option! Whether it’s a cute flamingo, a donut, or just a simple inflatable, it adds extra fun and relaxation to your pool or beach time.

Things Not to Bring

Towels // Resorts always provide towels for the pool and beach, so there’s no need to bring your own. However, if you’re particular about the type of towel you use, feel free to bring your own—just know it’s not a necessity.

Too Many Clothes // Remember, at an all-inclusive resort, you’ll likely be in a swimsuit about 75% of the time! Keep your packing light and don’t overpack clothes you won’t use. Focus on the essentials and let the beach vibes guide your wardrobe choices.

I’d absolutely love to hear if you have anything else you’d add to my list that makes your vacation even more enjoyable!

Here’s hoping we all get to start traveling again sooner rather than later.

Again, please stay safe and healthy.
